Birdwatching
trip to Morocco (22nd February – 10th March 2002)
Acknowledgement: we would like to
thank to everybody who helped and sponsored our trip. To Budget Car Rental,
especially to Mr Balázs Dobai at Budget Buda in Hungary; to Zoo Budapest; to
Franciska és Lányai Ltd.; to Kon-Tiki travel agency; to Atlas Insurance; to
Fujifilm Hungary; to Sandstone; to Mountex and Tengerszem. We would like to
thank to Mr Saad Baddou, embassador of Morocco in Hungary his help. We could
use his letter of recommendation right at the arriving!
Details: On all the trip
we preferred to sleep in tent not to bother with looking for hotels. This
proved to be very fruitful in most of the places (see below). Naturally
sometimes it was necessary to have roof over our heads (eg. in the High Atlas).
1st
day: Leaving Budapest, Hungary at 7 am. and arriving to Mohammed V.,
Casablanca (through Rome) at 13.30 (local time). We’ve picked up our car (a
Toyota Corolla) from Budget at the airport and head for the south. We’ve
reached Sidi Moussa in the evening. Birds to be mentioned: Black-shouldered
Kite
2nd
day: Waking up early we started at the lagoons and the Atlantic coast. The
local people were very friendly, we showed a lot of birds to them. One elder
man was very kind and brought tea and cake for us. We drove to Oualidia
checking the lagoons carefully and then through Safi we reached Tamri in the
evening. Birds to be mentioned: Slender-billed and Auduin’s Gulls; Crested
Coot, Great Spotted Cuckoo.
3rd
day: Waking up with the light we could enjoy the sight of arriving Bald
Ibises from the cliffs from 7 am. The place was north of Tamri at Agadir 60 km
stone. If you don’t want to spend too much time with searching the feeding
Ibises we offer to be somewhere here on the road in the early morning and catch
them when they’re leaving their roosting places. After a few hour Ibis-watching
we headed south. After a refreshing bath in the Ocean, through Agadir (where we
missed the road to the Red-necked Nightjar place at the mouth of Oued Sous
/river/) we arrived to Sidi R’bat at Oued Massa. We could sleep at the camping
place. Birds to be mentioned: Bald Ibis, our first Moussier’s Redstart and
House Bunting (jumping in a cafe where we were invited to a tagine-lunch).
4th
day: We started the day around the campsite. Then we walked down the river
to the coast (an Egyptian Mongoose seen on the opposite side of the river).
Again a memorable bath in the Ocean. We checked Massa village for Tchagra but
with no luck, then we went on south, arriving to Oued Seyad south of Guelmime
in dark. Birds to be mentioned: Laughing Dove, Marbled Duck, American Black
Duck, Crane, Bald Ibis.
5th
day: We headed towards Tan-tan checking the desert habitats and wadis by
the road. After 11 the day became so warm that no birds moved and we escaped
back to Guelmime where we had a tagine. We met a friendly guy who helped us
with all our questions and showed us the city, his home, and found water-pipe
for us. We left Guelmime in dark and drove back to Massa river and slept again
at Sidi R’bat. Birds to be mentioned: Cream-coloured Courser, Scrub Warbler,
Fulvous Babbler.
6th
day: We started in Massa village checking the places around the bridge
mentioned by Gosney. Now we had luck with both the Plain Martin and the
Tchagra. Finishing here we travelled east in the Sous-valley through
Taroudannt. We climbed up the Atlas mountains (seeing some Barbary Ground
Squirrel) and stopped in the tourist house at Tizi-n-Test. Birds to be
mentioned: Plain Martin, Tchagra, Egyptian Vulture, Levaillant’s Woodpecker
(only heard).
7th
day: Early birdwatching around Tizi-n-Test then we drove up Oukaimeden
(through Asni, Tahanaoute, and the Ourika-valley). We slept in the Fench Alpin
Hotel. Birds to be mentioned: Barbary Partridge (seen well), Peregrine, Ring
Ouzel, Shore Lark, Rock Bunting.
8th
day: Early morning birdwatching around Oukaimeden (disappointed by the lack
of Crimson-winged Finch now). Via Tizi-n-Tichka we drove down to Ouarzazate. A
quick look at the Barrage d’ El-Mansour-Eddahbi with the last lights, then in
dark arriving to the beginning of Tagdilt track at Boulmane-Dadés. Birds to be
mentioned: Dipper, Crag Martin, Bonelli’s Eagle, our first White-crowned
Wheatear.
9th
day: The day of Tagdilt track from dawn to dusk. The rubbish dump close to
Boulmane was the best place! In dark we drove to El Jorf. Birds to be
mentioned: Thick-billed, Hoopoe, Bar-tailed Desert and Desert Larks,
Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Cream-coloured Courser.
10th
day: Birdwatching in the oazis at El Jorf, then through Erfoud aiming
Merzouga. Only aiming because we got stuck in the sand at Cafe Dunes D’Or. We
could reach Cafe Yasmina in safe and spent the night there (in a smaller
sand-storm). Growing wind from mid-day and a very aggressive, shouting French
guy at Darkaoua kasbah (the owner?) spoiled birdwatching a little bit. Birds to
be mentioned: Fulvous Babbler, Tristram’s Warbler, Brown-necked Raven, Desert
Sparrow.
11th
day: Birdwatching around Cafe Yasmina until noon then driving north slowly
in Ziz-valley. Night in Midelt. Birds to be mentioned: Tristram’s Warbler,
Brown-necked Raven, Desert Sparrow, Black-eared Wheatear.
12th
day: Birdwatching around Tizi-n-Tretten and in Foret de Cédres around Mischliffen
(missing the Monkeys probably because of the bad weather). Night in Ifrane
(snowing heavily). Birds to be mentioned: Shore Lark.
13th
day: Start at Dayet Aaoua, then driving to Larache through Meknes. Spending
the night at the marshes. Birds to be mentioned: Levaillant’s Woodpecker (at
last seen), Bonelli’s Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Crested Coot, Purple Swamp Hen.
14th
day: From early morning birdwatching on Larache marshes then driving to
Merja Zerga. Waiting for Marsh Owl at the campsite in the evening. Birds to be
mentioned: Crested Coot (1100 counted), Purple Swamp Hen, Lesser Kestrel,
Slender-billed…Gull, Marsh Owl.
15th
day: Birdwatching at Merja Zerga, then going south to the Francolin site
south of Sidi Yahya Zaer (there’s a Sidi Bettache table in international
language at the junction in Sidi Yahya Zaer, wher Gosney mentiones only in
Arabic). Exploring the bushes around there, and sleeping at the car-park (with
Golden Jackals calling close). A short call of Farancolin heard. Birds to be
mentioned: Black-shouldered Kite, Booted Eagle, Lesser Kestrel.
16th
day: Waking up for the first Francolin calls. Altogether 4 birds heard, and
2 birds flushed (poor views). Then heading to Casablanca, having our last
tagine on the road. Sleeping at the airport, because no package-safe there. We
missed a night in Casablanca. Birds to be mentioned: Double-spurred Francolin,
Booted Eagle.
17th
day: Leaving Morocco at 14.30.
